Based in the Bronx, Jake's main goal remains at earning the title in his career as a professional fighter. The film is black and white in order to replicate the time it took place between 1941 to the mid 1950's. The story follows a middleweight boxer also known as the Bronx Bull, during his professional career as well as his life outside of the ring. The story was written by Jake LaMotta, Joseph Carter and Peter Savage. This film, made in 1980 starring Jake LaMotta played by Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as Joey. The camera work in the second Sugar Ray Robinson (Johnny Barnes) scene and the final soliloquy are iconic. Sure, he ditches the woman (Lori Anne Flax) he's initially with for a new one, but besides that, it's an up-and-down of athletic success, alienating family without reconciliation, and ultimately rock-bottom without redemption.
It's a biopic without the typical biopic arc. Perfectly De Niro, LaMotta goes from jocular to irate as he hectors his brother, Joey (Joe Pesci) to punch him in the face. Everyone, all the time, seems to be yelling and pushing and threatening each other with LaMotta at the nucleus of it all. It's the 1940s and 50s at the height of the urban Italian stereotype - think arguments from window to the street, guinea tees, crucifixes hanging on walls, and domestic abuse. In black & white, Scorsese puts forth a brutal movie from start to finish where you expect some of this sweat and bloodshed to act as a release for the irascible and uncontainable LaMotta. The sports actually in sports movies are usually pretty poor and the story typically has much more to do with the lives of the characters and their broader impact on the culture, but boxing seems to be an exception, as it is one of the most exciting, intimate, and enjoyable sports to capture in a dramatic film. Giacobbe "Jake" LaMotta (Robert De Niro) is never actually called "Raging Bull" in the film, but there couldn't be a better nickname for the middleweight boxer in describing his personality both in and outside the ring.
